An egress window is a window that meets minimum code requirements for size and operability, allowing a person to exit the building or a rescue worker to enter in an emergency. The term comes from the Latin for exit, and an egress window functions as a secondary means of escape in a fire or emergency situation.

In New Jersey, every sleeping room in a basement is required to have at least one egress-compliant window under the state's adoption of the International Residential Code. Without a code-compliant egress window, a basement room cannot legally be classified as a bedroom, regardless of how it is finished or used.

Beyond bedroom compliance, egress windows also bring natural light and ventilation to below-grade spaces, which improves livability and indoor air quality. They are one of the most frequently required upgrades when NJ homeowners finish or convert basement space.
