What is the difference between mass-concrete underpinning and helical pier underpinning?

Mass-concrete underpinning is the traditional pin-and-pour method in which sections of footing are excavated in a staggered sequence and replaced with deeper concrete, transferring structural load to a lower bearing stratum. It is well suited to New Jersey brownstones and masonry homes.

Helical pier underpinning drives galvanized steel piers to load-bearing soil or rock and then brackets them to the existing footing. It is faster, less invasive, and performs better on slab-on-grade construction or where conventional excavation is restricted by a high water table or by buried utilities.
