Why does my patio slope toward my house instead of away from it?

Patios slope toward the foundation when the soil beneath the outer portion settles faster than the soil near the house, or when the patio was installed without adequate compaction. This reverses the drainage slope and directs rainwater against the foundation wall, increasing basement water infiltration risk. Leveling the settled outer edge restores positive drainage away from the house.
