What material options are available for basement cellar doors?

Bilco and similar manufacturers offer cellar door panels in several materials, each with different performance and cost profiles.

Galvanized steel is the standard material for residential cellar doors. It is durable, weather-resistant, and provides adequate security for most applications. Steel units should be painted periodically to prevent surface rust at cut edges and fastener points.

Diamond plate steel is a heavier-gauge option with a raised tread pattern. It is more resistant to denting, handles heavy foot traffic better, and is commonly used for commercial or semi-commercial applications where the door receives frequent use.

High-density polyethylene doors are available for homeowners who want a rust-proof, low-maintenance option. These units are lighter than steel and will not corrode, but they are generally available in fewer sizes and configurations.

Scaldino Basement Solutions is a Bilco-authorized dealer and installs all Bilco door types. We will walk you through the available options and help you select the material that matches your use case and budget.
