Does a basement digout require waterproofing?

Yes. Waterproofing is not optional on a basement digout project. When you excavate below the existing floor level, you expose the lowest point of the structure to direct soil contact and groundwater. A new concrete floor slab poured without a drainage system and vapor barrier will develop moisture problems, often within the first year.

Scaldino Basement Solutions installs an interior drainage system along the perimeter of the new floor before the slab is poured, directing any water that enters through the walls to a sump basin and pump. A continuous plastic vapor barrier is also installed under the slab to block moisture vapor from migrating up through the concrete.

Waterproofing the new space is included in the project scope rather than treated as an add-on. This approach protects your investment, meets NJ code requirements for habitable below-grade space, and prevents the mold and moisture problems that make unprotected basements unusable.
