What is the difference between a replacement and a new basement door installation?

A basement door replacement involves removing an existing Bilco or bulkhead door and installing a new unit in the same or a similar opening. The foundation opening and surrounding concrete collar are already in place. This is a less disruptive project and costs significantly less because no concrete cutting or new structural work is required.

A new basement door installation creates an access point where none currently exists. This requires cutting through the foundation wall, installing a structural lintel above the opening, forming and pouring a concrete entry collar, building or adapting stairs, and installing drainage to prevent water pooling at the door base. This is a more involved structural project that requires a building permit and PE drawings in New Jersey.

Both projects result in the same outcome, which is reliable exterior basement access, but the scope, timeline, and cost are different. Scaldino Basement Solutions will assess your existing conditions and give you a clear proposal for whichever applies to your situation.
