Will floor lowering require moving my plumbing or sewer line?

It depends on where your existing drain lines and sewer connection are located relative to the new floor level. In many NJ homes, the main drain line exits the foundation at or near the current floor level. If lowering the floor by 12 inches or more drops it below the existing drain elevation, those lines must be rerouted.

Floor drains, laundry standpipes, and floor-mounted fixtures are the most common plumbing elements that need to be relocated. The main sewer connection at the exterior of the foundation is less often affected but must be reviewed.

Plumbing relocation requires a separate plumbing permit and must be done by a licensed NJ plumber. The cost varies based on how many fixtures need to move and whether the work requires breaking into the exterior of the foundation.
