What is the difference between basement floor lowering and a basement digout?

Basement floor lowering describes the end result: gaining usable ceiling height by dropping the finished floor elevation. A digout is one method of achieving it, where soil is excavated below the existing footing line and a new lower slab is poured alongside structural underpinning.

The other method, called benching, keeps the existing footings in place and builds an angled concrete bench around the perimeter. Digouts yield maximum usable floor area; benching is faster and cheaper but sacrifices wall-adjacent square footage.
