What is the difference between basement floor lowering and a basement digout?

Basement floor lowering describes an outcome, namely the recovery of usable ceiling height achieved by dropping the finished floor elevation. A digout is one method for achieving that outcome: soil is excavated below the existing footing line and a new lower slab is poured alongside structural underpinning of the foundation.

The alternative method, known as benching, keeps the existing footings in place and builds an angled concrete bench around the perimeter of the basement. A digout yields the maximum usable floor area; benching is faster and less expensive but sacrifices wall-adjacent square footage.
