Does basement door installation require cutting through concrete?

For a new installation where no existing opening is present, yes. Creating a new basement door opening requires cutting through the concrete or masonry foundation wall to the required opening dimensions, then installing a structural steel lintel above the new opening to carry the wall load across the gap.

Concrete cutting is done with diamond-blade saws and generates concrete dust and debris. Scaldino Basement Solutions contains the cutting area and cleans up debris before leaving the site each day.

The concrete collar at grade level, which frames the door opening above ground, is formed and poured as a new concrete element. This is separate from the foundation wall cut and happens after the structural opening is complete.

For a replacement installation on an existing opening, concrete cutting is typically not required unless the opening needs to be widened or the existing collar has deteriorated and needs to be reformed.
