What is the difference between a basement digout and basement underpinning?

Basement underpinning and a basement digout both go deeper into the ground, but they serve different purposes and use different methods.

Underpinning focuses specifically on the foundation footing. It extends the existing footing deeper into stable soil to improve structural support, often to stabilize a settling foundation or to increase ceiling height by a controlled amount in an existing basement. The floor area and wall footprint remain the same.

A basement digout involves excavating the entire floor area of a basement or crawl space to create or substantially increase usable below-grade space. A digout typically includes underpinning the perimeter walls as part of the process, but the primary goal is to remove and lower the entire floor, not just stabilize footings.

In practice, most full digout projects in NJ include underpinning elements because the existing perimeter footings must be protected during the excavation. The choice between a targeted underpinning project and a full digout depends on your starting conditions, height goals, and budget.
