Can underpinning be done in winter or cold weather in NJ?

Underpinning can generally proceed in NJ winter conditions, but cold weather requires additional precautions to ensure concrete cures correctly. Freshly poured concrete must be protected from freezing before it reaches a minimum compressive strength, typically 500 psi. Below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, concrete set time slows significantly, and below 20 degrees, exposed concrete can freeze and lose strength permanently.

Scaldino Basement Solutions manages cold-weather pours by using heated enclosures or blankets over fresh footings, using concrete mixes with accelerating admixtures where the structural engineer approves, and adjusting the pour and cure schedule based on the extended forecast.

There are situations where work may need to pause, particularly during frost periods that affect excavation access or when temperatures are expected to stay below 20 degrees overnight without adequate protection measures. Your project manager will communicate any weather-related schedule adjustments during your project. Contact Scaldino Basement Solutions to discuss your project timeline.
